Official OCI Services photo specifications
Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) applications on ociservices.gov.in require a square colour photograph not less than 51×51 mm (2×2 inch), with about 80% face coverage. The digital file must be JPEG/JPG, equal width and height between 200×200 and 900×900 pixels, and no larger than 200 KB.
The background must be plain light-coloured — not pure white — without a border. Show a front view of the head and shoulders with the full face centred, eyes open, and no distracting shadows. A US passport white-background square often fails these automated checks even when the print size matches.
Preparing a file that passes the OCI portal
PhotoGov’s India OCI preset outputs a 600×600 px square JPEG on a light off-white background and compresses toward the 200 KB portal limit. That sits inside the official 200–900 px range while staying under the file-size cap.
Photograph yourself facing the camera in even light, choose India OCI, then confirm the download is a borderless square under 200 KB before you upload on OCI Services.
Practical tips
- Do not use a pure white passport-style background — OCI FAQs explicitly reject white.
- Keep width and height equal; non-square crops fail the portal validator.
- Aim for roughly 80% face coverage with head and shoulders visible.
- Check the JPEG is ≤200 KB after download before re-uploading.
Common rejection reasons
- Pure white background instead of light-coloured
- File larger than 200 KB or not JPEG/JPG
- Pixels outside 200×200–900×900 or non-square image
- Border around the photo or face coverage far below ~80%
