Schengen visa photo size and biometric rules
Schengen short-stay visa photos are 35×45 mm and follow ICAO biometric guidance. The background should be plain light grey, and the head should occupy roughly 70–80% of the photo height so eyes, chin and forehead are clearly readable.
Look straight at the camera with a closed mouth and neutral expression. Sunglasses and tinted lenses are not allowed. Head coverings are only acceptable for religious reasons when the face outline stays fully visible from chin to forehead.
One photo for many Schengen countries
Whether you apply through France, Germany, Spain, Italy or another Schengen state, the photo dimensions are shared. Using a US 2×2 square crop is a frequent mistake and will not match embassy or VFS checklists.
Upload a clear portrait to PhotoGov, select Schengen Visa, and download a 35×45 mm light-background photo suitable for paper forms and many online appointment portals.
Photo tips
- Prefer a light grey wall; pure white can look too harsh for Schengen checks.
- Keep the camera at eye level so the face is not tilted.
- Ensure both ears are visible when your hairstyle allows.
- Print on matte photo paper if the consulate requires physical prints.
Common rejection reasons
- US-style square 2×2 crop instead of 35×45 mm
- Face too small in the frame
- Smile, open mouth, or turned head
- Busy background or heavy shadows behind the shoulders
