eFRRO Photo Size: 3.5×3.5 cm (413×413 px) JPG

Size and crop an unedited photo to the FRRO spec. We can't guarantee acceptance.

The eFRRO portal asks for a recent front-facing JPG photo, 3.5 × 3.5 cm or 3.5 × 4.5 cm, no larger than 1 MB, with a plain light or white background, no shadows, eyes open and the full face visible. Upload the photo portion only. Photos edited with Photoshop or apps are rejected, so start from an unedited shot.

Official eFRRO photo requirements

Per the current eFRRO portal photo instructions (indianfrro.gov.in, checked 18 Oct 2026): Format – jpg; Size – Maximum 1 MB; Full face, front view, eyes open; Plain light colored or white background; No shadows on the face or on the background; Passport size: 3.5 × 3.5 cm or 3.5 × 4.5 cm; Upload photo portion only; Don't upload tilted, distorted or blurred photo; Bring the same photo along with the application form.

Older instruction pages also mention centering the head within the frame (full head from top of hair to bottom of chin) and uploading without borders. Some older pages listed a 50 KB photo limit; the current portal text says 1 MB. Source: indianfrro.gov.in.

“Edited photos will be rejected” – what that means for you

The portal states: “Photographs which are edited or modified by Photoshop or any other Software/ Mobile App will be rejected.” Take a new photo against a plain light or white wall. Do not use beauty filters, face-smooth apps, or tools that replace the background.

PhotoGov’s India FRRO preset detects the face (same MTCNN detector used by our other ID-photo presets), then crops and resizes your unedited image to 35×35 mm (413×413 px) and exports a JPG under 300 KB. It does not remove or replace the background and does not apply beautification. Whether a crop counts as “modification” is not defined by the portal; FRRO makes the final decision. The eFRRO upload flow itself includes a crop box.

How to take an eFRRO photo at home

Stand against a plain light or white wall near a window so light falls evenly on your face from the front. Avoid overhead lamps that cast shadows under the eyes or behind the head.

Hold the phone at eye height about 1–1.5 metres away. Keep a neutral expression with eyes open and look straight at the lens so the full head from the top of the hair to the chin is in frame. Removing glasses is a practical tip (not an official eFRRO rule) if reflections hide the eyes.

Size and crop your photo with PhotoGov

Choose India FRRO Registration, upload a clear unedited portrait taken against a plain light wall, then download the cropped JPG. PhotoGov only sizes the file to the published 3.5×3.5 cm dimensions; acceptance remains with FRRO.

Practical tips

  • Shoot a fresh photo on a plain light wall — do not digitally replace the background.
  • 3.5×4.5 cm is also accepted by eFRRO; this preset exports the 3.5×3.5 cm square option.
  • Keep the file as JPG. PhotoGov targets under 300 KB, which fits the current 1 MB portal limit and older 50 KB-era guidance when kept small.
  • Upload only the photo portion, not a full passport page scan.

Why eFRRO rejects photos

  • Background not plain light/white, or shadows on the face or backdrop
  • Photo tilted, distorted, or blurred
  • Uploaded a full document page instead of the photo portion only
  • Photo edited or modified with Photoshop, filters, or mobile apps
  • File not JPG, or other format/size problems

FAQ

What size photo does eFRRO need?

3.5 × 3.5 cm or 3.5 × 4.5 cm, JPG, maximum 1 MB, per the current eFRRO portal instructions.

What background is accepted?

Plain light-coloured or white, with no shadows on the face or background.

Can I edit my eFRRO photo?

The portal states that photos edited or modified by Photoshop or any other software or mobile app will be rejected. Take a new photo against a plain light wall instead of editing the background.

Why does some guidance say 50 KB?

Older eFRRO instruction pages listed a 50 KB maximum; the current portal says 1 MB. A smaller file (for example under 300 KB) fits both.

Does PhotoGov guarantee my photo will be accepted?

No. We size the image to the published dimensions; acceptance is decided by the FRRO.

Do I need to bring a printed photo?

The portal says to bring the same photo along with the application form.
